The Sohar Refinery Expansion Project is inching towards a soft opening by the end of 2016 as planned earlier. The $2.7-billion project should be completed by the end of first quarter of 2017, said Salim al Aufi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Oil and Gas.

“Once the project is completed, we will see a major expansion of Sohar refinery. It will also complement Mina Al Fahal (MAF) Refinery. At the moment, some heavy residues from MAF is returned to the PDO. After the expansion, we will be able to utilise everything, making the operations more flexible,” said Al Aufi.

The project is also significant because of its connectivity between Sohar Refinery, Mina Al Fahal Refinery and the storage tanks in Al Jiffnain. The Jiffnain storage project is worth $350 million. “There will be storage tanks in Jiffnain for operational reasons. Pipelines will connect Sohar for 300 km from Muscat.” “From the point of view of GDP, the project would add another two per cent, taking Orpic’s contribution to eight per cent.

The project will also add an additional 900 direct jobs for nationals and 12,000 indirect and induced jobs,” the Undersecretary told Observer. “The project will take some of the existing natural gas, strip out the liquid component and use it for the project,” said Aufi. The Sohar Refinery Improvement Project (SRIP) is expected to be operational by early 2017.
