ODIM awarded an order worth about NOK 95 million for two advanced deepwater cranes by China's Zhejiang Shipyard, a subsidiary of Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group. The contract relates to two 150-tonne ODIM ABAS deepwater cranes, featuring active heave compensation which makes it possible to use the equipment in tough weather conditions.

These units will be installed on two advanced Ulstein SX130 subsea support ships under construction at Zhejiang Shipyard for Neptune Offshore, with delivery from December 2009 to February 2010. The Chinese yard has previously built a number of high-quality offshore vessels, and is due to deliver its fourth Ulstein-designed ship during October. It awarded ODIM a contract earlier this year covering four automated ODIM LARST launch and recovery systems for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and deck cranes for the same vessels.

"The subsea and deepwater market is growing, and we see a big potential in the design and installation market both now and in the longer term," says vice president Jon Olav Kopperstad at ODIM. "Our contracts from Zhejiang Shipyard demonstrate that we're also in the process of becoming a complete supplier of automated handling system in the promising deepwater market."

ODIM has gradually built up its activities in Asia over the past few years, and the commitment to this part of the world has accelerated during 2008. A new regional manager is in place, Singapore has become the regional centre for ODIM Asia, and an office has been opened in the Chinese port of Shanghai. In addition, the construction of an assembly and testing facility at Vung Tau in Vietnam is on schedule for completion next spring.
