10 Years Since Russia’s First LNG Cargo was Offloaded

Ten years ago, on 29 March 2009, the first scheduled Russian LNG cargo was successfully loaded from the Sakhalin-2 LNG plant onto the LNG carrier Energy Frontier. That cargo was to be taken by two of the Company’s main customers: Tokyo Gas and Tokyo Electric.

Sakhalin-2 has become a reliable energy bridge between Russia and Asia-Pacific countries. Launch of the Sakhalin-2 LNG Plant in 2009 made Russia a key player in this high-potential market.

Over ten years, the Company has offloaded more than 1,600 standard cargoes of LNG (one standard LNG cargo equals 65 thousand tonnes), over 100 million tonnes of LNG in total. The LNG is delivered to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Currently, Sakhalin Energy is supplying LNG to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China.

In 2018, Sakhalin LNG supplies made up 4.8% of the APR LNG market, 8.2% of the Japan's LNG market and ~3.6 % of the global LNG market.

Annual production capacity of two LNG trains (9.6 million tonnes, the LNG plant design capacity) is committed in long-term SPA's signed with LNG buyers from Japan, South Korea and other.

As a result of the Company’s continuous efforts to optimise the facility processes, first Russia’s LNG plant output has been increased by 20% over the ten-year period. This provides the Company’s successful sales of additional LNG volumes as part of mid-term, strip and spot deals.

Sakhalin Energy has consistently occupied high positions in the global rankings to the extent related to safety, reliability and efficiency of production processes, which is the best way to recognise Sakhalin Energy as a reliable energy supplier to the Asia-Pacific region.
