Petris to Commercialize Data Software

The head of Texas-based Petris Technology Inc. recently visited Dhahran to celebrate finalizing the agreement between Saudi Aramco and Petris to commercialize the Data Services Software (DSS) and to deliver the first payment under the agreement.

The visit was the culmination of a long process to enable Petris to market the software, which was designed by the Exploration Application Services Department (EASD) to manage large amounts of data in several databases so engineers and researchers can access scientific data efficiently and cost-effectively.

Petris Technology president and CEO James Pritchett thanked the company, Aramco Services Co. and the Data Services team for their cooperation in bringing the software to the marketplace and presented a symbolic check for $100,000.

Abdullah A. Al-Naim, vice president of Petroleum Engineering and Development, accepted the check on behalf of Saudi Aramco and commended the Data Services Team and all the Saudi Aramco organizations that took part in the commercialization process.

“New Business Development (NBD) has successfully commercialized a number of intellectual properties,” said NBD vice president Abdulaziz M. Al-Judaimi, “and although some of them extract only a small amount of revenue for Saudi Aramco, they support the core strategic objective of collaboration and partnership with the energy industry.”

He encouraged employees to think in new ways and to highlight potential commercialization opportunities in their areas of expertise.

EASD manager Adel S. Al-Naji said he was proud of the efforts that went into creating the Data Services Software, and he noted that by 2011 about 60 percent of Exploration’s Seismic data workflow will be accessed through DSS.

He stressed that the commercialization agreement will ensure wider acceptance in the industry for the Data Services technology. He added that over the next decade, Saudi Aramco expects cost savings and revenues from the Data Services Software to be in the multi-million-dollar range.Perhaps the biggest winners, however, are the employees of Exploration and Producing, whose jobs become easier because of the new software.

“Exploration has long embraced the vision of providing its E&P technical staff with easy desktop access to accurate and complete data regardless of its physical location in the enterprise,” said Hussain M. Al-Otaibi, manager of Exploration Technical Services. “Exploration organization will continue to work in collaboration with Exploration Application Services Department to leverage the DSS technology to achieve this objective.”
