Sapura Energy Berhad announced that its President and Group CEO Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin is planning to retire after leading the Group for 25 years. Tan Sri Shahril will be stepping down from his post upon reaching the retirement age of 60 on 22 March 2021.

Sapura Energy’s Board of Directors has appointed Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib as Chief Operating Officer and CEO Designate effective 1 October 2020, as part of a six-month transition.

Tan Sri Shahril founded Sapura Energy in mid 90’s, building the Group from its humble beginnings as a diving contractor, into the global integrated oil and gas company that it is today. “Under his leadership, Sapura Energy has grown from a domestic focused player into a renowned global oil and gas company serving the entire upstream value chain. This includes becoming a regional independent oil company via SapuraOMV, with net resources in excess of 260MMboe, serving a significant part of Malaysia’s natural gas requirement,” said Chairman Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas. “Tan Sri Shahril’s legacy will be the Group’s highly-skilled and technically capable multinational human capital, strategic world-class assets, sound processes and strong project management capabilities.”

Tan Sri Shahril will be passing the baton after ensuring the Group remains agile and resilient during the current difficult operating conditions; sustaining progress from its comprehensive transformation plan.

“We are transforming Sapura Energy to remain relevant and competitive in the new energy landscape. Our agile strategy, the right capabilities and entrepreneurial spirit nurtured throughout the years will enable us to embrace the new energy transition,” said Tan Sri Shahril.

Datuk Mohd Anuar was appointed independent and non-executive director of Sapura Energy in August 2020. He began his oil and gas career with Sarawak Shell Berhad in 1990, after completing his Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical) from Case Western Reserve University, in the United States. Datuk Mohd Anuar also holds a Masters of Business Administration degree in International Management from the RMIT University, Australia.

At Shell, he had a well-rounded experience in various leadership roles in exploration and production, LNG and gas-to-liquid, refining and retail business, in Malaysia, the US and the Asia-Pacific region; culminating to the position of Chairman of Shell Companies in Malaysia in 2010.

Datuk Anuar then joined PETRONAS as Vice President of Development and Production, and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, and was later appointed PETRONAS Executive Vice President and CEO, Upstream. At the national oil company, he was instrumental in improving the delivery of capital projects, reduction in operating costs and the set-up of the successful low-cost and marginal field subsidiary Vestigo Petroleum.
