INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) and the Joetsu City Gas and Water Bureau (the bureau) jointly announced they entered into a carbon neutral gas sales and purchase agreement and started supplying carbon neutral gas. Through this agreement, the bureau will purchase carbon neutral gas from INPEX from July 2021 to March 2026 and convert a portion of the natural gas it supplies to major customer Arisawa Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Arisawa) to carbon neutral gas, contributing to a CO2 reduction of approximately 19,000 tons. In addition, the bureau will convert the natural gas utilized at its own facilities to carbon neutral gas.

The bureau is promoting the reduction of CO2 emissions through the proposal of energy-saving solutions to customers and fuel conversion, based on its management policy as a gas operator of promoting the efficient use of natural gas, which has a limited environmental impact. The bureau will leverage this agreement to work toward the widespread adoption of carbon neutral gas in order to support the further growth of customers such as Arisawa that are working to reduce their CO2 emissions. Currently, the bureau markets carbon neutral gas exclusively to large-scale consumers. However, the bureau is making preparations to supply carbon neutral gas to commercial and industrial customers also. The bureau will furthermore contribute to the realization of a carbon-free society and the sustainable growth of communities by reducing its CO2 emissions.

INPEX, as outlined in its “Business Development Strategy - Towards a Net Zero Carbon Society by 2050,” has set goals to achieve its own net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and will proactively engage in energy structure reforms towards the realization of a net zero carbon society. The company will work closely with city gas business operators to which it supplies wholesale natural gas and implement measures contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases on a global scale alongside its customers by responding to their needs by providing solutions such as carbon neutral gas and other forms of clean energy.
