The Government of the Sakhalin Region, ROSATOM and Gazprom have signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy, which outlines the main steps for the hydrogen production complex project implementation on Sakhalin Island. The parties intend to cooperate in order to establish hydrogen production on the island of Sakhalin using steam methane reforming with further carbon dioxide capture, supply natural gas to produce the new fuel, and organize a system of product supply to foreign markets and to consumers in the Sakhalin Region.

The document was signed on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum by Valeriy Limarenko, Governor of the Sakhalin Region, Kirill Komarov, First Deputy Director General for Development and International Business of ROSATOM, and Vitaliy Markelov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Committee of PJSC Gazprom.

“The authorities of the Sakhalin Region are interested in developing clean energy on Sakhalin which would not harm the environment or people’s health. It is also important for us to create on Sakhalin Island a big export-oriented hydrogen production cluster and to implement new types of fuel in various sectors of the economy. It will allow us to develop unique competences in the region that are highly valued in the promising global market of hydrogen. As a result, the region will have a new high-tech economy sector that will create a lot of jobs for local residents for many years to come”, the Governor Valeriy Limarenko said.

“Rosatom is focused on the development of low-carbon technologies and actively participates in establishing the hydrogen energy market in Russia. Using hydrogen in such sectors as transportation, utilities, and the chemical industry will significantly reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere and ensure the transition to environmentally friendly production methods. I am sure that Gazprom’s participation and comprehensive support from the Government of the Sakhalin Region will allow this ambitious project to be successfully completed”, stated Kirill Komarov, First Deputy Director General for Development and International Business of the Rosatom State Corporation.
