Sustainable practices and initiatives such as decarbonisation are, more than ever, a necessity within any sustainability strategy. A pioneer in the energy transition in Brazil, Neoenergia is expanding its customer portfolio in the Free Contracting Environment (FtA), with a focus on clean energy. The company has just signed an energy trading contract with Ambar, the energy arm of the J&F group, which includes companies such as JBS, Eldorado Brasil Celulose, Flora, PicPay and Banco Original. Under the agreement, in the PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) modality, the J&F group accesses 30MWm of renewable energy from two new wind complexes that are under construction in the Northeast, through the marketing on the free market for the next ten years, starting in 2023.

"The contract with Ambar is a demonstration of business concern about the environmental issue and that our commitment to a more sustainable model in the electricity sector, started more than 15 years ago, is on the right track. The market increasingly values sustainability in business and we continue to innovate and strive to meet the demand for clean energy. The 27 new parks we are building in Paraíba, Bahia and Piauí will triple our installed wind power capacity. In addition, the company is advancing in the implementation of two solar plants, also in the Northeast, and we are aware of the opportunities to expand our investment portfolio", says the Director of Liberalized Business of Neoenergia, Hugo Nunes.

Because it was carried out in the PPA model, the contracting brings several advantages, such as more savings, since prices are prefixed, flexibility and guarantee that energy is renewable, generating value for the customer, security in relation to availability and revenue from selling energy.

"Access to clean energy sources is strategic for the J&F group, with its companies moving faster and faster to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in production chains," explains Marcelo Zanatta, President of Ambar Energia. JBS, for example, recently made a commitment to "Net Zero 2040" to zero its net carbon emissions by 2040. PicPay, in turn, has already offset 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

The Iberdrola group, the controlling shareholder of Neoenergia, has expertise in this type of agreement globally, mainly in countries such as the United States, Mexico and Spain. In Brazil, another contract of this type was signed by Neoenergia in 2020 with Claro and is tied to the company's first large solar plant, Luzia (PB), which will have power of 149.3 MWdc.

The two wind farms that will generate part of the energy supplied to Ambar are expected to start operating between the second half of 2021, being part of the Chafariz project, under construction in the Sertão da Paraíba. The project will have a total of 15 parks and installed capacity of 471.2 MW, the works were started in 2019 and, in anticipation of the business plan, at the end of June, operations of the first wind turbines began. At the moment, 53 equipment is in operation, representing an installed capacity of 184 MW. In all, there will be 136 turbines from one of the most modern models in the global market. The construction of the project generated more than 1,400 jobs in the region. In addition, the new asset has operational synergy with the Solar Power Plant Luzia the Transmission Line Santa Luzia.

The Oitis Wind Complex started in November 2020, three months ahead of the business plan. There will be 12 parks, with an installed capacity of 566.5 MW. This energy will have Renewable Energy Certification (I-REC), a seal widely recognized by the market that guarantees the use of clean energy.

With the new parks, Neoenergia will reach 1.5 GW of installed capacity in wind power, three times the current power at this source. The increase in renewable investments is aligned with the company's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily to provide clean energy and combat climate change. In addition, it contributes to Iberdrola's global decarbonization target, which aims to neutralize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
