SONATRACH-ASAL Collaborative Research for Estimating Flared Gas Volumes

As part of its policies to reduce the carbon footprint and promote research, SONATRACH , in collaboration with the Algerian Space Agency ( ASAL ), has taken an important step in terms of estimating the volumes of gas flares through the satellite tool.

The objective of this collaboration is to allow a better estimate of the results obtained by SONATRACH in terms of reducing gas flaring and more generally of the reduction in the carbon footprint induced by its activities.

Indeed, ASAL researchers have implemented a methodology for estimating the volumes of gas flared from the exploitation of nocturnal images in the visible and infrared of the VIIRS sensor on board the meteorological satellite Suomi NPP.

This methodology was rewarded and published in the A-rank scientific journal: “Remote Sensing” of the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), on May 10, 2022.

The results obtained by ASAL demonstrate consistency with the volumes measured on the ground by SONATRACH , in comparison with those published by other organizations and which present significant differences in the volumes observed linked, according to the study carried out by the ASAL, with the calibration coefficient not updated and not taking into account specific flaring events (stops, starts, trips, etc.).

The precision of this methodology, developed by ASAL, is based on the “automatic detection of the flame of the flared gases on the VIIRS satellite images”, associated with the application of “spectral unmixing” techniques aimed at working on the spectra “ pure” of the flames of flares and on the “calibration of the volumes of the radiant heat”.

For SONATRACH , the fruit of this collaborative research supports its efforts in the field of environmental protection to achieve its objectives in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

This collaborative research further demonstrates SONATRACH 's confidence in the Algerian researchers who support it in the continuous improvement of its performance.
