Equinor seeks to develop its large-scale hydrogen production capacity as it submits a co-funded bid, worth over £16m ($19.6m) into the UK Government for a major 1.2GW low carbon hydrogen production facility in the Humber, North East England.

Revealed today (June 22), the 1.2GW Hydrogen to Humber (H2H) Production 2 project hopes to be operational by 2028, delivering low carbon hydrogen across sectors in the region.

Combined with Equinor’s 600MW H2H Saltend project on the north bank of the Humber River, the company anticipate the two projects could meet 18% of the UK Government’s 2030 goals of 10GW of hydrogen production capacity.

The £16.4m ($20m) bid submitted to the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund, administered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) would be 50% privately funded, with a grant hoped to support the project with a target of reaching final investment decision (FID) by 2025.

Involved in the project, the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) are set to develop a digital twin of the hydrogen supply chain to identify opportunities for the UK manufacturing supply chain.

The Humber region is among the most carbon intensive industrial areas in the UK, with a number of emitters that could benefit from hydrogen to clean up their processes, Equinor has said.

H2 View understands Equinor’s project would be located near the proposed Zero Carbon Humber (ZCH) scheme hydrogen infrastructure, which is also spearheaded by Equinor.

Dan Sadler, Vice-President for UK Low Carbon Solutions at Equinor, said, “This co-funded bid helps to maintain and unlock private investment in low carbon hydrogen projects in the Humber. It will underpin the creation of a world first hydrogen economy in an end-to-end value chain.

“This scheme will position the UK at the forefront of the race to a hydrogen economy helping transition major local industries towards greener technologies whilst creating opportunities for both local and national businesses.

“H2H Production 2 will help establish an ‘at scale’ hydrogen economy in the Humber delivered by world leading, best in class partners which will provide a UK an international lighthouse replicable across the world.”
