INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Australian energy provider AGL Energy (AGL) to conduct a feasibility study for AGL’s Hunter Energy Hub in the state of New South Wales in Australia. Hunter Energy Hub is the second hydrogen hub study that INPEX is pursuing with AGL, following the partnership on the Torrens Hydrogen Hub in South Australia announced on June 17, 2022. The Hunter Energy Hub project mainly envisages hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and the export of hydrogen and hydrogen derived products. INPEX will study the feasibility of the hub in cooperation with AGL and other partners.

Hunter Energy Hub seeks to introduce a hydrogen industry to the Hunter region of New South Wales by utilizing the site of the AGL-owned Liddell power station as well as existing infrastructure located in its vicinity. The Port of Newcastle has been identified as a potential offloading location, raising possibilities for the hub to facilitate hydrogen exports to Japan and other countries in the future, given Newcastle’s relative proximity to key markets.

INPEX seeks to develop a hydrogen business, which is one of the 5 net zero businesses outlined in the company’s INPEX Vision @2022 announced on February 9, 2022. The company plans to commercialize three or more projects by around 2030 and aims to produce and supply 100 thousand tons or more of hydrogen/ammonia per year. INPEX will proactively engage in energy structure reforms towards the realization of a net zero carbon society while fulfilling its responsibilities for the stable development and supply of energy.
