Offshore wind developer Deep Wind Offshore has entered into an agreement with Seatech Ltd, for the supply of two floating LIDAR systems for wind measurements at their sites in South Korea. The LIDARs will be installed on its recently awarded permits obtained to occupy public water and secures exclusivity to project sites for GW-scale offshore wind development.

– The awarded permits and agreement with Seatech are great achievement for Deep Wind Offshore in South Korea. This supports our strategy of providing clean electricity for coastal communities at the same time as paving the way for local supply chain in our projects, says Knut Vassbotn, CEO of Deep Wind Offshore.

The first of the two floating LIDARs is scheduled to be deployed in the fourth quarter this year on the project site in the Southern Sea offshore South Korea. It will then collect data from the site for at least one year. When the measurement campaign is completed, Deep Wind Offshore will apply for an Electricity Business Licence and continue towards construction permits and Financial Investment Decision for the project.

Moving forward

Deep Wind Offshore has offices in four locations around the South Korean peninsula, and is solely focused on offshore wind projects. The company is backed by strong industrial owners, including Knutsen OAS who have been present in Korea since 2004. Over the last three decades, Knutsen OAS has been a major client to the Korean shipyards and has currently 27 vessels under construction in Korea.

— The local supply chain in South Korea is world class in ship building, while the wider array of companies to support offshore wind development, such as Seatech, also is rapidly growing. This is positive for realizing projects both in South Korea and internationally. Deep Wind Offshore is excited to partner with both established and growing companies, and to contribute to the value creation from projects in South Korea. With our latest agreement, we are really moving forward in this market, says Knut Vassbotn.
