TTS Power, a division of TTS Energy Services, recently upgraded and restored a 138Mw gas turbine that had been out of service for 11 years. Working with its local partner, Verteville Energy Services, TTS completed a project for the complete controls upgrade, as well as commissioning services, on a Siemens SGT5-2000E (V94.2) gas turbine. TTS provided all engineering, hardware and commissioning services, with Verteville assisting with trained local technicians and support personnel. The units are installed at a newly privatized power plant having over 900Mw of installed capacity.

TTS retrofitted their TMS-1000R control system based on an Allen Bradley ControlLogix Redundant platform with Dynamix vibration monitoring and XM overspeed protection into the existing control cabinets. For the operator interface, TTS deployed an AVEVA InTouch HMI application.

“The project presented a real challenge as a great deal of existing site knowledge, operating experience, as well as condition of the unit, had deteriorated during the many years of inactivity.” Said Chris Crowell, who as Manager of TTS Controls Design, headed up all engineering activities. Despite the challenge, Chris’ team installed and commissioned a system that is now successfully controlling a gas turbine which is in commercial operation for the first time in many years. A 2nd Siemens unit will be upgraded in 2023.

TTS has a long history of providing power and upgrades in West Africa, and Nigeria in particular, with over 600Mw of gas turbines installed and multiple units upgraded and serviced.
