On 2 December 2022, Ørsted announced a new collaboration with two prestigious academic institutions, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) to super charge Vietnam’s emerging offshore wind sector.
HUST is the largest university in Vietnam engaged in research, knowledge development and training in science, technology and engineering. DTU is recognised internationally as a leading university for wind power research and energy systems education. With funding and support from Ørsted, DTU and HUST will join forces to build connections, transfer knowledge and facilitate training for students, researchers and lecturers to strengthen expertise in offshore wind, a vital industry of the future for Vietnam.
This new collaboration has been delivered just a month after Ørsted and local partners T&T Group, together with the National Innovation Center under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, signed a landmark agreement on Capacity Building and Technology Transfer for offshore wind.
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to launch an Offshore Wind R&D, Training and Industrial Development Center under the National Innovation Center. This will act as a focal point for human resource development, technology transfer, supply chain development and research to make offshore wind a success in Vietnam.
Sebastian Hald Buhl, Country Manager of Ørsted Vietnam, says:
“Today we have delivered the first concrete action from last month’s MoU with T&T Group and the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s National Innovation Center. This agreement brings together some of the brightest minds in offshore wind to enhance talent, technology and training in Vietnam. It will deliver meaningful joint research and training activities that will benefit Vietnam’s offshore wind sector as a whole and act as a springboard for further important activities.”
Associate Professor Nguyen Huu Thanh, Head of School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, says:
“At our university, HUST commits to human development, high-quality education, scientific research, technological innovation and knowledge transfer. We strive to become the leading research and engineering university. In the effort to provide the power industry with highly skilled engineers, we are very honoured to collaborate with Ørsted – the leading global offshore wind power producer, and the Technical University of Denmark – a world-renowned university. This collaboration will help to build a foundation for knowledge transfer and capacity building, to support the establishment of the offshore wind industry in Vietnam.”
Professor Peter Hauge Madsen, Head of Wind and Energy Systems Department, Technical University of Denmark, says:
“The climate challenges are urgent and we really need to collaborate to beat these challenges. In Denmark, we have been working on wind energy for 40 years and around 50% of our supply is now powered by wind energy. I'm very pleased that we can bring our experience and expertise to work together with HUST on education and research to improve the capacity as well as the technology in the future. This MOU signed today will pave the way for a long collaboration between Denmark and Vietnam on research and education on offshore wind energy."
