“As large-volume water users, our industrial partners long have expressed the need for a sustainable drought-proof water source. In response to that call to action, Port of Corpus Christi Commissioners voted Tuesday to authorize Port staff to pursue the second permit needed to advance plans for the proposed desalination facility on Harbor Island,” said Port of Corpus Christi Commission Chairman Charles W. Zahn, Jr. “The first permit, issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in September, granted the Port’s application to discharge effluent water. This next permit addresses the intake for the salt water that will be converted to desalinated water. The Port acknowledges and respects the City of Corpus Christi as the primary water provider for the area. We will continue to proactively develop a much-needed solution for the Coastal Bend’s anticipated water supply challenges in a manner that will ensure the continued economic health and prosperity of our region.”
