East African Exploration (EAX) a subsidiary of Black Marlin Energy (BMEL) and partner Avana Petroleum Limited have completed a second seismic survey on two tranches of their southern acreage in the Seychelles using Seabird Exploration’s vessel Geo Mariner.

The original 3,650 km 2D survey, acquired in 2007, identified an extensive and deep sedimentary section between and around the granitic islands. These granitic features are linked geologically to those that underpin the massive Bombay High and flank the prolific Cambay basin, both on the west coast of India.

The new 1,156 km 2D survey has allowed better definition of large potential trapping geometries such as the tilted fault blocks previously identified in the south of Tranche A. BMEL also acquired data over the Coetivy leads in Tranche C. The program completes the group’s seismic commitment under the first exploration period of the Petroleum Agreement (PA). The 15,000 sq km PA acreage was awarded in November 2008 after the group reviewed 43,000 sq km and selected optimal locations for more detailed study.

The survey areas include some very large structures in both shallow and deep water targets and the Tranche A project is close to the wells drilled by Amoco in 1980/81. The wells had significant oil shows which correlate geochemically to the tar balls occasionally found on Seychelles beaches, indicating an unequivocal link and an active, indigenous, hydrocarbon system. Recent independent evaluation of BMEL assets in the Seychelles indicates potential unrisked original oil in place (OIIP) of 1.464 billion barrels and a GIIP of 1.492 Tcf.

Jeff Hume, CEO of Black Marlin Energy, comments: “We are very pleased to be ahead with our work program in the Seychelles the new data acquired with the experience gained from our earlier program has confirmed several opportunities which we look forward to drilling in the near future. We have no doubt that the Seychelles has excellent commercial oil potential and this concentrated program, on one of the most prospective and interesting areas in our acreage, is designed to help us identify firm drilling targets for the next phase of exploration”
