ESL Shipping further enhances its compliance work by joining the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN). With the membership in MACN, ESL Shipping joins over 180 shipping companies and other institutions to fight against corruption, which is unfortunately still a reality in certain countries. Although the group’s vessels mainly trade in Northern Europe, some of the vessels can occasionally sail in the areas where the risk for bribery and corruption is high.

”Membership in MACN provides us additional tools to support our seafarers when they visit areas where the risk for bribery and corruption is high. Thanks to their large database, we will have a better understanding of what kind of issues might be expected in a certain port,” says Operations & Environmental Director Kirsi Ylärinne.

“When our vessel is expected to call a port where the crew is expected to face a risk of facilitation payments or other attempts of fraud or corruption, our safety function goes through the best practices according to internal and MACN guidelines with Master. Together they ensure that direct contact lines and procedures are established for each port call”, says Sea Personnel, Quality & Safety Director Mikko Rausti.

Erik Jansen, Master of m/v Kallio says that MACN gives a solid practice for preparation for port calls in unfamiliar or new areas. With the support of the office and other stakeholders, he feels more comfortable meeting the challenges and risks outside ship's regular trading area.

Maritime Anti-Corruption Network collaborates with governments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society to identify and mitigate the root causes of corruption; and to create a culture of integrity within the maritime community.
