Axpo will develop one of the largest battery storage facilities in Sweden, it was announced today. Acquired from project developer SENS (Sustainable Energy Solutions Sweden), the facility in Filipstad is designed to provide ancillary services to help balance the electricity grid. Construction is expected to start in early 2024.

Axpo will develop a 25 MW lithium-ion battery storage system around 300 km west of the Swedish capital Stockholm, in the town of Filipstad. The battery storage will be used to provide ancillary services to help balance the electricity grid. Construction of the plant is expected to commence in early 2024. At the same location, Axpo will also continue to develop a ground-mounted solar plant with a capacity of up to 20 MW. The two projects cover an area of ??over 23 hectares (230,000 m2). SENS (Sustainable Energy Solutions Sweden) initiated the development of both projects, which Axpo acquired on 15 May 2023. Axpo and SENS will co-develop the two projects. The parties have agreed not to disclose commercial terms of the transaction.

Axpo Group Head of Batteries & Hybrid Systems, Frank Amend, said: “We are acquiring two important projects from SENS, which we will co-develop with them. Battery storage systems and solar energy are becoming increasingly important in the power mix of the future, and we look forward to further cooperation with our colleagues from SENS.”

SENS CEO Henrik Boman said: “We are thrilled to partner with Axpo, a leading international utility that truly is at the forefront of driving the energy transition across Europe. This project will be one of Sweden’s largest solar and battery parks, so we are very proud to be collaborating with such a well-respected and experienced partner. We will work closely together to ensure the project’s success and see great potential for future partnerships with Axpo.”
