This exciting new engine marks a new chapter in our history, which has previously been dedicated to the design and production of diesel engines. Hydrogen is destined to become one of the main energy carriers of the future, contributing to the global drive for CO2 neutrality.

Hydrogen can be produced from water using renewable electricity and burns without emitting particulate matter, carbon monoxide or volatile organic compounds. Aftertreatment systems are used to eliminate most of the small amount of NOx which is produced.

Furthermore, H2 internal combustion engines (H2-ICE) also bring important advantages to the vehicle manufacturers. The technology is similar to that used in their current production vehicles, making powertrain system adaptation, maintenance, troubleshooting, service and refuelling easy.

This new 2.2L, 3 cylinder-in-line engine has evolved from our R753 engine. A team of engineers has worked to update the technical specifications to include state-of-the-art injectors, common rail, pistons, spark plugs, ignition coil and pressure regulator which are necessary for hydrogen fuel, while maximising component standardisation with its diesel predecessor.

With 62 kW output and 270 Nm peak torque, the H2-ICE performance will be around 10% higher than that of the diesel engine from which it was created. The engine will meet EURO VI E and STAGE V emissions regulations. Series production of this engine is planned for 2025.
