The “Grampian Derwent” Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for North Star has been delivered from Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam.

The world`s largest windfarm
This SOV is the second of four purpose designed and built ships destined for decade-long minimum charters to support operations and maintenance (O&M) work at the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm. Once the windfarm currently under construction is fully operational, the complete windfarm will become the largest in the world, producing enough electricity to power six million British homes.

Vard 4 19 design
The vessel is based on the Vard 4 19 hull design and has been developed with North Star specifically to handle planned maintenance on the Dogger Bank A, B and C sites and tailored for effective and efficient operations in the harsh North Sea environment more than 130 kilometers off the north-east coast of England. Crew and client well-being is vital to ensure safe and efficient operations, with workflow, comfort and facilities on board a strong focus throughout the process.

SeaQ by Vard Electo
For optimal efficiency, the vessel utilizes a cutting-edge diesel-electric propulsion system, bolstered by a battery hybrid power management and architecture. It incorporates the highly efficient Voith eVSP propulsion and a drop-down azimuth thruster for field efficiency. Additionally, the vessel benefits from the comprehensive SeaQ power package delivered by Vard Electro, providing complete control over the onboard power systems. This integration allows for reduced fuel consumption, minimized emissions, improved responsiveness, and enhanced safety.

Two remaining hybrid-electric powered SOV newbuilds
The two remaining hybrid-electric powered SOV newbuilds, being built by VARD, are on track for being operational at Dogger Bank A, B and C by 2026. The company’s state-of-the-art design provides high-quality accommodation to offshore wind turbine technicians, as well as a centralised logistics hub configured to handle cargo and act as a functioning warehouse offshore.

North Star contracted VARD for up to a further four new offshore wind vessels
In May 2023, North Star contracted VARD for up to a further four new offshore wind vessels. The new commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs) take the firm a step closer to its ambition of expanding its fleet with 40 renewables fleet by 2040 to support the growing UK and European markets.

North Star has an unrivalled North Sea maritime expertise and a proven track record for carrying out multiple fleet builds simultaneously. It employs more than 1,300 crew and onshore personnel at its offices, harbour and workshop facilities in Lowestoft, Port of Tyne and Aberdeen. It was acquired by Partners Group, a leading private global markets firm, acting on behalf of its clients, in 2022.
