West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has started piloting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) for its operations, in line with the company’s commitment to gradually shift towards the use of “green” transportation to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Under its decarbonization program, Maynilad plans to eventually shift its fleet to 50% EVs, or around 413 units, by 2037. An initial batch of three electric vehicles were recently turned over to Maynilad for utilization this year, while a second batch of 41 units will be made available over the next five years. These EVs were supplied by E-Sakay, Inc., a subsidiary of Meralco.

In the photo, Maynilad Sustainability Department Head Emmanuel Martinez inspects the first batch of delivered EVs. Maynilad’s shift to EVs is in compliance with Republic Act 11697, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Act, which requires business establishments such as Maynilad to have at least five percent of its fleet be comprised of EVs. This is to ensure that greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, and the use of clean, sustainable, and efficient energy is promoted.
