Sojitz Corporation (President: Masayoshi Fujimoto; “Sojitz”) and ENEOS Corporation (President: Takeshi Saito; “ENEOS”) held an on-site opening ceremony on September 28th for Edenvale Solar Park, a joint solar power generation project in Queensland, Australia. Sojitz and ENEOS first acquired stake* in the solar project via joint venture holding company, Sapphire Energy Pty Ltd.

Edenvale Solar Park marks Sojitz and ENEOS’ first large-scale solar project in Australia with an installed capacity of 204MW(DC: Direct Current), and Edenvale represents the largest solar project in Australia to be undertaken by Japanese companies. Construction on Edenvale Solar Park began in June 2021. The opening ceremony in September was held to celebrate reaching rated output at the solar farm.

Attendees of the opening ceremony included Cameron Dick, Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment; Lance McCallum, Assistant Minister for Energy; Paul McVeigh, Mayor of the Western Downs Regional Council; Junji Gomakubo, Consul-General of Japan in Brisbane; and other project participants.

Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland commented “Queensland continues to lead the charge on sustainable energy generation. It’s clear the world recognizes the opportunities present and is choosing Queensland to invest. This major project is a win for Queensland and all Queenslanders who will benefit from its solar power generation.”

Cameron Dick, Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment commented “We are very excited about this ground-breaking project, as it will not only transform the way we generate energy but will also contribute to a sustainable future for the community. About 400,000 solar panels will generate enough renewable energy to power 60,000 homes, that’s enough to power a city the size of Cairns. Investments like this ensure the regions have reliable, affordable power year-round.”

Sojitz established the Sustainability Challenge as its long-term sustainability vision for contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society. Australia has relied on coal-based power as one of the world’s most natural resource-rich countries, but this solar project is positioned to support Australia’s shift towards renewable energy. Sojitz also plans to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by supplying a portion of the energy produced through this solar farm to Gregory Crinum coking coal mine used for steelmaking, which is owned and operated by Sojitz in Queensland. In addition to developing more renewable energy projects in Australia, Sojitz will continue to provide a stable supply of renewable energy with competitive services to companies operating in Australia via energy-saving air conditioning design and construction company, Ellis Air Group Pty Ltd. (joined Sojitz Group in May), in order to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.

ENEOS is taking on the challenge of achieving both “a stable supply of energy and materials” and “the realization of a carbon neutral society” under its Long-Term Vision to 2040. As part of these efforts, ENEOS is actively promoting power generation centered on renewable energy in Australia to realize decarbonization and a recycling-based society through the supply of eco-friendly energy.

Australia seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and the country is promoting new investment in renewable energy that utilizes the country’s abundant natural renewable energy resources. Moving forward, both companies aim to advance development of renewable energy projects in Australia as business opportunities in the field continue to expand.
