Today, the four German transmission system operators (TSOs) – Amprion, 50Hertz, TenneT and TransnetBW – published the preliminary national transmission grid fees for next year. The TSOs are pleased that the transmission grid fees are to remain at almost the same level as last year thanks to a grant of €5.5 billion from the Federal Government. As a result, the preliminary average grid fees for next year will amount to 3.19 cents per kilowatt-hour. This corresponds to an increase of around 2 percent. Last year, the transmission grid fees amounted to 3.12 cents per kilowatt-hour.
The calculation of the national transmission grid fees results from the prognosis of the cost base (revenue cap) and the provisional sales volumes for 2024. For 2024, the TSOs expect lower costs with regard to the revenue cap compared to 2023; nevertheless, these costs are still high. The main cause for this is the price level on the fuel and electricity markets. This particularly affects the costs for redispatch, grid reserves and the provision of control power as well as for the procurement of electricity to cover grid losses.
The provisional grid fees for 2024 were determined taking into account a grant following a decision by the Federal Government on the pro rata coverage of the transmission grid costs. At the time of publication, the legal basis for this grant was not established yet. The preliminary grid fees are therefore subject to the legal basis being established by 6th December 2023. If the legal basis for the pro rata coverage of the transmission grid costs is still not in place by then, the final national TSO grid fees for 2024 will be higher as a result.
