Launch of 5 Major SNIM Development Projects

On 26 November 2023, SNIM launched a series of projects to develop its operations and strengthen the socio-economic infrastructure of the city of Zouerate. The launch of these projects was carried out by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as part of the commemorative festivities of the 63rd anniversary of the National Independence Day.

At the foot of the Kedia, where SNIM’s history began over six decades ago, His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, laid the first stone of F'Dérick mine development project.

This $186.8 million investment project aims for one to produce two million tonnes of iron ore per year and strengthen the company’s market position In addition to the open-pit mining, the project includes processing and maintenance facilities, including crushers, an iron ore conveyor system and train loading facilities for transporting the product to the port in Nouadhibou.

According to the Minister of Petroleum, Mines and Energy and government spokesman, Nany Ould Chrougha, "the launch of this series of vital projects will enable to make a qualitative leap forward in improving SNIM's performance, and in maximizing its revenues for the benefit of the country as a whole, and for the inhabitants of this region in particular".

In his inaugural speech, the SEO and Board Member Mr Mohamed Vall Ould Telmidy, highlighted the main thrusts of SNIM's strategic programme.

In particular, he highlighted the company's ambition to increase production, diversify its products, add value to them, and promote its human resources, while paying greater attention to sustainable development and to the promotion of strategic Gpartnerships in the mining and energy sectors.

Mr Mohamed Vall Ould Telmidy also recalled SNIM's development advantages, including its enormous iron ore reserves, estimated at billions of tonnes.

The President of Tiris Zemmour Regional Council, Mr. Hadrami Ould Ahmed, welcomed projects that will have a positive impact on the economic development of the country in general, and that of the wilaya of Tiris Zemmour in particular. He expressed his hope that this wilaya will henceforth be able to make the most of the exploitation of its natural resources.

The mayor of F'Dérick, Mohamed Cheikh Mohamed Salem Bolla, said that the inauguration of F'Dérick mine is another milestone on the road to developing the national economy, which would have a positive impact on the daily lives of his citizens.

A 30 MW thermal power plant
The construction of a 30 megawatt thermal power plant is part of the series of projects launched in Zouerate by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The completion of the project in 17 months' time will increase electricity production in this moughataa, particularly to support SNIM's development.

It will also meet the region’s growing economic and social energy needs. The capital cost of the project, financed from own funds, is 55,125,025 euros.

Drinking water production increase in Zouerate
The commissioning of the extension of the brackish water desalination plant for the city of Zouerate is part of the projects inaugurated by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, on November 26, 2023 in the mining town.

With an additional daily production of 1,000 m3, the supply of drinking water to the city of Zouerate is expected to improve significantly. Thanks to this project, the city's water supply network has been equipped with new storage and pumping infrastructure, as well as a modern management system.

This $8,412,589 project is a new footprint of the SNIM Foundation in the region where it has already built several socio-economic infrastructures.

Upgrading Zouerate's urban road network
After water and electricity, Zouerate’s road network has also witnessed a strengthening and modernization project owing to a funding from the SNIM Foundation, totaling MRU 124359348.

The extension and rehabilitation project of the public road network in the city of Zouerate was inaugurated by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, among the projects he launched on November 26, 2023.

This investment has enabled the construction of ten kilometres of asphalt and the rehabilitation of six other kilometres of the city's roads.

Reinforcing SNIM’s energy mix
After several years of commitment to the development of renewable energies, SNIM is going to see soon its energy mix being reinforced.

The construction of the 12 MW solar power plant for which His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, has laid the foundation stone on 26 November is a new step by SNIM towards green energy.

This project represents a total equity investment of $10,757,284 and will be completed in the coming weeks.
