TransAtlantic was incorporated in 1985 under the laws of British Columbia and changed domicile to Alberta in 1997. In 1992, The Company acquired a 30% interest in OML 109, a 215,000 acre concession located offshore Nigeria. TransAtlantic Petroleum Ltd. is an international energy company engaged in the acquisition, development, exploration and production of oil and natural gas. The Company holds interests in developed and undeveloped oil and gas properties in Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania.

TransAtlantic Petroleum Corp. explores and develops crude oil and natural gas properties in Morocco, Turkey, and Romania. The Company acquires and develops acreage in countries that are under-explored, have proven petroleum systems, and feature low corporate tax and royalty rates. Recently, TransAtlantic changed its operating strategy from a prospect generator to a vertically integrated project developer. To execute this new strategy, the Company acquired Longe Energy Limited, an entity with drilling & oil field services equipment formerly owned by The Mitchell Group. Together with the acquisition, The Mitchell Group injected capital to support TransAtlantic's drilling plans.
