The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) remains a key supporter of global efforts to promote the transition to a green economy and achieve Net-Zero. This aligns with the UAE’s commitment to addressing the impacts of climate change and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over its nine previous editions, WGES has consistently provided actionable solutions and clear strategies for leveraging technology and innovation to address sustainability challenges. The summit facilitates the exchange of expertise among prominent experts, specialists, and decision-makers from around the world in energy, economy, climate change, and sustainable finance.

WGES is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO), the summit annually addresses key themes and topics aimed at galivenising global efforts to enhance the transition towards a sustainable green economy, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030. This year's summit, themed ‘Empowering Global Action: Unlocking Opportunities and Advancing Progress,’ will take place on 2-3 October 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD&CEO of DEWA, and Chairman of WGEO, underscored that achieving a sustainable green economy necessitates striving for a future that is low-carbon, resource-efficient, and socially inclusive.

“In line with the vision of our wise leadership, the UAE is committed to making a tangible positive impact on the ultimate goal of humanity, that of achieving sustainable development by 2030. The World Green Economy Summit continues to build on the progress made by previous global conferences, especially the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), hosted by the UAE at Expo City Dubai in 2023. By providing a platform that brings together stakeholders from across the world, the summit will underline future solutions for a swift and equitable transition to an integrated global green economy. The 10th World Green Economy Summit aims to advance dialogue and create opportunities to enhance cooperation and joint action on a global scale to achieve positive outcomes in sustainability and decarbonisation, an area of primary focus this year,” said Al Tayer.

“Last year was demonstrably the warmest year on record. According to UN data, the global average temperature for the period from July 2023 to June 2024 was 1.64°C above the pre-industrial average. This underscores the importance of strategies for carbon capture and storage, case studies on decarbonising the economy, transitioning to low-carbon processes, and measuring and reporting carbon footprints, all of which will be key discussion points,” added Al Tayer.

“The impact of climate change cuts across all aspects of our economy from the way we travel, to the way we consume energy to our food chains. Embracing a green economy requires all parties within the public sector and the private sector to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The World Green Economy Summit is a great forum to help achieve these goals and I look forward to attending it,” said Jean Louis Morcos, Senior Investment Officer and Regional Sustainable and Climate Finance Lead, IFC.

The list of speakers and participants includes prominent experts and specialists from vital sectors worldwide. They will focus on advancing the green economy, promoting the global sustainability agenda, and contributing to the achievement of the UN SDGs 2030, with a strong emphasis on adopting innovative green solutions to bolster sustainable development mechanisms. WGES 2024 will centre on several key thematic pillars, including Decarbonisation and Net-Zero Goals; Clean Energy Advancements; Climate Finance; Circular Economy; Policy and Regulatory Frameworks; Using Technology to Tackle Climate Change; Youth in Climate Change; and Food and Water.
