French energy firm EDF and renewables developer Abraxas Power have announced that they will form a joint venture, “Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation” (EVREC), to develop a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen and ammonia facility in Canada’s most eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Abraxas registered the project with the provincial government for an environmental assessment last month, having already secured more than 300 square kilometres of Crown Land for development.
The project would include three wind farms with a combined 3.5GW capacity in central Newfoundland, a 150MW solar array, and a 2.6GW green hydrogen and ammonia plant in Botwood.
The facility, which EVREC plans to build in phases for commissioning between 2028 and 2030, would produce around 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year, feeding into one million tonnes of ammonia production.
United H2 Limited is pleased to see these developments as they show continued investment into building critical hydrogen infrastructure.
