To celebrate the opening of the Qatar Sustainability Expo 2012, H.E Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman & Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum (QP), presented an official copy of the Qatar Energy and Industry Sector Sustainability Report to H.E Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority and President of COP18/CMP 8.

Held at the Qatar Energy and Industry Pavilion of the Doha Exhibition Centre, the presentation ceremony was attended by senior delegates from COP18/CMP 8, QP directors, CEOs from the energy industry, as well as members of the international media. The event represents the energy and industry sector’s contribution to the COP18 /CMP 8 conference, which is presently being held in Doha.

In his keynote address, H.E Dr. Al-Sada remarked that the Sustainable Development Industry Reporting Program was a key mechanism for supporting the sector’s implementation of sustainability.

“This year’s report captures the essence of sustainable development efforts of the major energy company of Qatar. It emphasizes two high-priority sustainability issues: first the safety measures and the quality of safety performance data and second, the sector’s climate change approach and performance, which includes several large initiatives that we have undertaken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said H.E. the Minister.

“I can say with confidence that Qatar, and its Energy and Industry Sector in particular, is well positioned as an energy leader that provides critically needed, lower emission and environmentally friendly LNG, to all corners of the globe while implementing economic diversification and environmental stewardship,” he added.

All operators will comprehensively report their Health Safety and Environment (HSE) and Sustainable Development (SD) performance data and evolve a 5-year strategy that oversees continual improvement.

Commenting further on the future of the Sustainable Development Industry Reporting programme was Saif Al-Naimi, Director of QP’s HSE Regulations and Enforcement Directorate.

“We will continue to look for ways to raise the bar of the SDIR programme as a leading regional initiative that promotes transparency, performance and improvement. We aim to continue driving improvements in the sector’s reporting and performance on sustainability issues and adding value and contribution towards the Qatar National Vision 2030,” he said.
