Marubeni Corporation (“Marubeni”) will invest in the construction and operation of a biomass co-firing power project located at Tokuyama Factory of Tokuyama Corporation (“Tokuyama”) in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
Today, Marubeni Thermal Power Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Marubeni, signed the Shareholder Agreement for this project with Tokuyama and Tokyo Century Corporation. Preparation for construction of the power plant will start in October 2017, and commercial operation is scheduled to start in 2022.
The new power plant will have a total capacity of 300MW. An environmental assessment has already been completed and the project will operate in an environmentally friendly manner. It will be partly operated by biomass fuel and supply steam to Tokuyama as well as generate electricity. The electricity off-taken by Marubeni will be sold to end users through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Marubeni Power Retail Corporation.
Marubeni has been developing and operating domestic power businesses in Japan with various environmentally-friendly energy sources such as biomass, solar, wind, hydro and thermal. Marubeni will continue contributing to the stable supply of electricity and activating the local economy through this project.
