JERA Co., Inc. (“JERA”) has decided to resume operations at Sodegaura Thermal Power Station Unit 1 (the “Unit”), which is currently under a long-term planned shutdown, beginning in mid-April.

Because the Unit had deteriorated over time and its utilization rate had declined, in FY 2021 JERA attempted to sell its electricity to an electricity retailer through the power generation facility bulletin board run by the Organization for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators, Japan (OCCTO). However, because no applications were received and no contract was signed, the Unit has been in a long-term planned shutdown since April of this year.

Meanwhile, in response to the tight power supply caused by factors such as the earthquake that occurred off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture on 16 March this year, JERA has, in order to ensure a stable power supply, been working to prepare to quickly resume operations at the Unit given its potential for use.

JERA recently received a proposal from an electricity retailer to supply it with electricity, and discussions led to an agreement, so JERA has lifted the Unit’s long-term planned shutdown and will operate it from mid-April to mid-September.

JERA will move forward to restore the Unit from its long-term planned shutdown and will make every effort, in cooperation with related parties, to ensure a stable supply of energy.
