Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has set up a 20MWp Solar Power plant at their Manesar-based manufacturing facility. The plant is supposed to contribute 28,000 MWh per annum, which is sufficient for the energy required for over 67,000 car production annually.

MSI Managing Director & CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi said in his statement that harnessing renewable energy is the need of the hour. They are committed to the government’s vision of making India rich in the use of renewable energy sources.

He further added their efforts are getting aligned toward encouraging decarbonization in a bid to bring down the emissions.

“MSI is committed to the cause of expanding the use of sustainable energy options to optimize their operations. The power generation from this plant will constitute over 11.5 percent of the power requirement of the facility at Manesar plant,” Takeuchi noted.

They have been harnessing solar energy since 2014 when they installed their first solar plant of 1 MWp capacity at their Manesar facility, which got later expanded to 1.3 MWp, said MSI.

In 2020, Maruti Suzuki also commissioned a 5 MWp carport-style photovoltaic solar power plant at their Gurugram facility.

With this new 20 MWp solar plant at Manesar, Maruti Suzuki’s combined solar power generation capacity across its plants now stands at 26.3 MWp.

The latest expansion will lead them to avoid 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Utilizing the East-West direction concept & maximizing generation by using minimum land, this 20MWp car-port style solar power plant is designed with the lowest area per unit of power generation.

Parking spaces for about 9,000 finished vehicles get created by this facility.

In its mid-term management plan, Suzuki Motor Corporation, a Maruti Suzuki parent company, has prioritized carbon reduction in its products and manufacturing processes.

The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki is also committed to implementing environment-friendly initiatives for carbon reduction in its support, it stated.
