RWE Dea AG has completed its seismic campaign in the Concession Area 58 on the Cyrenaica Plateau in Libya. The seismic survey had started in July last year.

Seismic trucks in Area 58The seismic survey in Area 58 covered some 4,780 kilometres. “Initial data evaluations were carried out, in the field as well as at our offices in Tripoli, while seismic data was still being acquired, in an effort to gauge the quality of the data at an earliest possible stage,” said Dr Thomas Radwitz, General Manager of RWE Dea Libya Branch. In the course of this year, RWE Dea experts will continue with the evaluation of the processed seismic data in order to identify the most promising structures and pinpoint locations suitable for drilling exploration wells the following year.

RWE Dea Libya Branch had already reached an important milestone for health, safety and environmental protection in Area 58 in September of last year: No incident or injury leading to loss of work time had occurred during seismic surveys for a period of five years. This represented a total of 1,300 days, or six million “LTI”-free (Lost Time Incidents) man hours. By the time the seismic work was completed end of January this year, this successful run had been extended even further.

“In the recently completed seismic survey in Area 58, day-to-day operations, involving a fleet of the worlds largest vibro-trucks needed to acquire high quality seismic data, employed up to 400 personnel simultaneously and therefore required utmost attention and care,” said Radwitz. “RWE Dea will continue to make every effort to maintain the high standard of zero accidents among our own staff as well as among the contractors deployed.”

Concession Area 58, in which RWE Dea holds a 100-per cent stake, was awarded about two years ago by the Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC). Area 58 is located in the northeast of Libya and covers approximately 11,000 square kilometres.
